Chapter 5: Examination, Licensure and Registration

Section 1. Examination. An applicant applying for licensure by examination must:
(a) Meet the requirements of Chapter 2 Section 1 (relating to application procedures);
and
(b) Pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) for physical therapists or physical therapist assistants with a score set by the Board. Score reports must be sent directly to the Board by the authorized score reporting service.
(i) The Board will notify applicants in writing of the exam score.
(c) An applicant may take the examination for PT or PTA licensure only after the application process is complete and all requirements are met.
Section 2. Re-examination. The following provisions apply to an applicant applying for licensure by re-examination.
(a) An applicant who fails the examination the first time is eligible to take the examination a second time after notifying the Board office in writing to request eligibility.
(b) If the second examination is failed, a minimum of six (6) months shall pass before a third examination can be taken. To be eligible to register for the third or subsequent examination the applicant must submit a letter that identifies the area(s) of weakness and describes the plan that addresses the correction of those areas.
