Chapter 9: Licensure for Architects

Section 1. Issuance. When the Board has determined that an applicant has satisfied the standards set forth herein, the Board shall issue a license containing the licensee's name and license number.
Section 2. License Classification. Three types of license classification are used to denote the method by which the applicant obtains licensure:
(a) Type A License, Licensure by Prior Practice (or grandfathering): Type A licenses were issued to those qualified applicants upon passage of the initial licensing act in the year 1951. No further type A licenses will be issued.
(b) Type B License, Licensure by Examination: Type B licenses shall be issued to qualified applicants passing all divisions of the ARE.
(c) Type C Licensure, Licensure by Reciprocity: Type C licenses shall be issued to qualified applicants currently licensed in another jurisdiction.
Section 3. Issue and Renewal of the Type A License. The initial license shall expire on December 31st of the year following the year of issue. Thereafter, the renewal period is two years.
Section 4. Issue and Renewal of the Type B License. The initial license shall expire on December 31st of the year of issue. Thereafter, the renewal period is two years.
Section 5. Issue and Renewal of the Type C License. The initial license shall expire on December 31st of the year following the year of issue. Thereafter, the renewal period is two years.
Section 6. Fees. Initial license and renewal fees shall be in accordance with Chapter II, Section 10.
Section 7. Wall Certificate and Card Certificate. Upon being granted licensure the applicant shall be issued a wall certificate of standard design, bearing the Board seal and signed by the designated Board members. A card certificate shall be issued bearing the class, number, and expiration date of the license, and is reissued only upon receipt of the renewal fees. Cards issued demonstrate receipt of payment.
Section 8. Not Transferable. A license shall not be transferable.
Section 9. Refusal, Suspension, or Revocation of License. In the event of revocation, cancellation or suspension of any license, the licensee shall be required to surrender his/her wall certificate immediately to the Board.
Section 10. Reissuance.
(a) Any license allowed to lapse may be reissued by the Board.
(i) For type A and type B licenses: The Board shall require a complete application and application fee plus a $25.00 fee for each year the license was in abatement. The license shall expire on December 31, of the year reissued.
(ii) For type C licenses:
(A) If application is made within three (3) years of the expiration date the Board shall require a complete application and application fee plus a $25.00 fee for each year the license was in abatement.
(B) If application is made three (3) years or more after the expiration date the Board shall require a current NCARB certificate, complete application and application fee, a $25.00 fee for each year the license was in abatement.
(C) The license shall expire on December 31, of the year reissued.
(a) Any license revoked or suspended may be reinstated by the Board upon appropriate finding. A written appeal for reinstatement must be submitted to the Board.
(i) For type A and type B licenses: Upon approval the Board shall require a complete application and application fee plus a $25.00 fee for each year the license was in revocation or suspension. The license shall expire on December 31, of the year reinstated.
(ii) For type C licenses:
(A) If the appeal is made within three (3) years of the date of revocation or suspension, upon approval, the Board shall require a complete application and application fee plus a $25.00 fee for each year the license was in revocation or suspension.
(B) If the appeal is made three (3) years or more after the date of revocation or suspension, upon approval, the Board shall require a current NCARB certificate, complete application and application fee, a $25.00 fee for each year the license was in revocation, suspension or cancellation.
(C) The license shall expire on December 31, of the year reinstated.
Section 12. Temporary Permits. Temporary permits shall not be granted for any reason.
