License expiration, renewal, reinstatement of expired licenses and continuing education.

  1. (a) A license issued by the board shall expire on June 30 of odd-numbered years unless sooner suspended, revoked, or surrendered.

  2. (b) A licensee shall renew by submitting:

    1. (1) A complete renewal application;
    2. (2) The renewal fee;
    3. (3) Evidence that the renewal applicant is currently certified as a genetic counselor by the ABGC or ABMG or as a medical geneticist by the ABMG; and
    4. (4) Evidence that the renewal candidate has completed 30 hours of continuing education as approved by the board within the preceding two-year period.
  3. (c) If a licensee fails to timely renew his or her license, then the license automatically expires.
  4. (d) A person who applies for initial licensure shall be exempt from the continuing education requirements for the biennial renewal period following initial licensure.
  5. (e) The board may waive all or a portion of the continuing education requirement for biennial renewal for a licensee who shows to the satisfaction of the board that the licensee was unable to complete the requirements due to serious illness, military services, or other demonstrated hardship.
  6. (f) Continuing education programs and providers shall be approved by the board in accordance with standards and criteria established in legislative rule, along with criteria and process for seeking a waiver of the continuing education requirement due to illness, military service, or demonstrated hardship.

  7. (g) If a license automatically expires and reinstatement is sought within one year of the automatic expiration, then an applicant shall submit:

    1. (1) A complete reinstatement application;
    2. (2) The applicable fees as set forth in legislative rule;
    3. (3) Evidence that the reinstatement applicant is currently certified as a genetic counselor by the ABGC or ABMG or as a medical geneticist by the ABMG; and
    4. (4) Evidence that the reinstatement applicant has completed all applicable continuing education requirements for the biennial renewal period preceding the reinstatement application.
  8. (h) If a license automatically expires and more than one year has passed since the automatic expiration, then the individual shall apply for a new license.
