As used in this chapter:

1. (1) "Adequate records" means legible records that contain, at a minimum:

   1. (a) the athletic training service plan or protocol;
   2. (b) an evaluation of objective findings;
   3. (c) the plan of care and the treatment records; and
   4. (d) written orders.
2. (2) "Athlete" means an individual who participates in or performs an exercise, a sport, an occupational activity, or a game that requires physical strength, agility, flexibility, range of motion, speed, or stamina, and the exercise, sport, occupational activity, or game is of a type generally conducted in association with an educational institution or professional, amateur, or recreational sports club or organization.

3. (3) "Athletic injury" means:

   1. (a) an injury an athlete sustains that affects the athlete's participation or performance in an exercise, a sport, a game, or an occupational activity; or
   2. (b) a condition that is within the scope of practice for athletic training that a licensed physician, a licensed nurse practitioner, a licensed physician's assistant, or a licensed physical therapist identifies as benefitting from an athletic training service.
4. (4) "Athletic trainer" means an individual who is licensed under this chapter and performs within the scope of practice for athletic training.
5. (5) "Board" means the Athletic Trainers Licensing Board created in Section 58-40a-201.

6. (6) "Collaborating physician" means a licensed physician who works in collaboration with an athletic trainer and is:

   1. (a) a physician and surgeon licensed under Section 58-67-301;
   2. (b) an osteopathic physician and surgeon licensed under Section 58-68-301;
   3. (c) a chiropractic physician licensed under Chapter 73, Chiropractic Physician Practice Act;
   4. (d) a naturopathic physician licensed under Chapter 71, Naturopathic Physician Practice Act; or
   5. (e) a dentist licensed under Section 58-69-301 who, within the licensee's scope of practice and individual competency, is responsible for the athletic training services provided by the athletic trainer and oversees the practice of athletic training by the athletic trainer, as the board requires by rule made in accordance with Title 63G, Chapter 3, Utah Administrative Rulemaking Act.
7. (7) "Collaboration" means the consultation, correspondence, direction by order, or referral between a licensed athletic trainer and a collaborating physician working within the collaborating physician's scope of practice and individual competency.

8. (8) "Practice of athletic training" means a licensed athletic trainer applying principles and methods of:

   1. (a) prevention of athletic injuries;
   2. (b) recognition, evaluation, and assessment of athletic injuries and conditions;
   3. (c) immediate care of athletic injuries, including common emergency medical situations;
   4. (d) rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries;
   5. (e) athletic training services administration and organization; and
   6. (f) education of athletes.
