Transportation Code, §201.614 directs the Texas Department of Transportation to establish the Safe Routes to School Program. The overall purpose of this program is to enhance safety in and around school areas through a construction program designed to improve the bicycle and pedestrian safety of school age children. The Safe Routes to School Program is a competitive construction program funded through state and federal funds and local contributions. The sections under this subchapter prescribe the policies and procedures for the implementation of the program.
