S.D. Codified Laws § 9-19-10 (2026)
Except as otherwise provided in this section, a mayor in any municipality operating under the aldermanic form pursuant to chapter 9-8 may exercise the veto power granted by § 9-8-3, by filing a written objection with the finance officer within ten days after its passage. If only part of an ordinance or resolution making an appropriation is vetoed, the remainder must take effect. The mayor may not veto any ordinance or resolution necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, safety, or support of the municipal government and its existing institutions if the ordinance or resolution:
