PURPOSE: This rule establishes acceptablemethodsofeliminatingAme,- ican foulbrood disease from the apiary.

1. (1) The elimination of American foulbrood disease must be accomplished prior to certification. Colonies infected shall he placed under quarantine and shall not be moved until the disease has been eradicated. In severe cases the entire apiary may be placed under quarantine.

   1. (A) If any apiary, appliances, structures, buildings or bees are found to be infected with American foulbrood, the owner shall eradicate the disease in one (1) of the ways listed as follows:

      1. 1. By stateapproved chemotherapy treat-

ments, such as the feeding of antibiotics, where the disease has not spread to the point of weakening the colony beyond the possibility of control with chemotherapy treatments;

1. 2. By burning, where permitted, the

contents of the diseased hives, including bees, combs and associated frames, together with any other diseased combs and associated frames found in the apiary. Bees shall be 2 CSR 70-15 , m

exterminated in a manner approved by the Missouri Department of Agriculture. Burning shall be in an open pit and ashes shall be buriednoless thaneighteeninches(18”) below the surface of the soil; and disinfecting, by scorching, while in the presence of an inspector, the hive bodies, covers, bottom boards, supers and appliances associated with them. Frames may be salvaged by boiling, in the presence of an inspector, in lye water solution (one(l)poundlyeperten(lO)gallons water) for not less than twenty (20) minutes.

1. 3. By burning the entire hive and contents

in an open pit, where permitted and while in the presence of an inspector, burying the ashes no less than eighteen inches (16”) below the surface of the soil; and

1. 4. By other methods approved by the state

entomologist as science and technology make them available.

1. (B) Upon the eradication of the disease, a certificate of inspection will be issued to those persons who requested inspections.
