Subd. 1. Certification.

Upon granting a family leave to a member, an employing unit must certify the leave to the association on a form specified by the executive director before the end of the fiscal year during which the leave was granted.

Subd. 2. Payment.

1. (a) Notwithstanding any laws to the contrary, a member who is granted a family leave under United States Code, title 42, section 12631, may receive allowable service credit for the leave by making payment of the employee, employer, and additional employer contributions at the rates under section 354.42, during the leave period as applied to the member's average full-time monthly salary rate on the date the leave commenced.
2. (b) The member may make payment, without interest, to the association by the end of the fiscal year following the fiscal year in which the leave terminated or before the effective date of the member's retirement, whichever is earlier.

Subd. 3. Subsequent eligibility.

The member shall return to public service after the leave period under United States Code, title 42, section 12631, to receive allowable service for a subsequent authorized family leave.
