Sec. 144. The specific control measures for endemic typhus (infectious agent: Rickettsia species) are as follows:

1. (1) An environmental investigation for the presence of rodents or squirrels, or both, around the premises of the home of the patient shall be done within seventy-two (72) hours. Provide guidance on:

   1. (A) the use of insecticides to kill rodent fleas; and
   2. (B) rodent exclusion from the premises or home.
2. (2) Standard precautions are required for hospitalized individuals.
3. (3) Concurrent disinfection is not required.
4. (4) Quarantine is not required.
5. (5) Immunization is not available. Protection of contacts is not applicable.
6. (6) Case definition is established by the department.
