Sec. 127. The specific control measures for rabies (see also animal bites in section 80 of this rule) are as follows:

1. (1) An investigation by the local health officer in collaboration with the state public health veterinarian shall:

   1. (A) be performed immediately; and

   2. (B) identify:

      1. (i) the route of the exposure;
      2. (ii) the animal responsible for the exposure; and

      3. (iii) other individuals who may have been exposed to:

         1. (AA) that animal; or
         2. (BB) the salivary secretions of the patient.
2. Individuals who have been exposed to salivary secretions of the patient shall be evaluated for postexposure prophylaxis. Postexposure prophylaxis guidance is provided in section 80 of this rule.
3. (2) Standard precautions shall be followed for hospitalized patients. Health care workers shall prevent mucous membrane and open wound contact with patient's saliva.
4. (3) Concurrent disinfection is required. Saliva and articles contaminated with saliva shall be disinfected.
5. (4) Quarantine for animals may be required depending on circumstances (see section 80 of this rule).

6. (5) Contacts who have experienced saliva exposure to:

   1. (A) open wounds; or
   2. (B) mucous membranes;
7. should receive postexposure prophylaxis.
8. (6) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists set the standard clinical and laboratory case definition.
