1. (a) No person shall:

   1. (1) remove, obliterate, or alter the importer or manufacturer's serial number on any firearm; or
   2. (2) possess any firearm on which the importer or manufacturer's serial number has been removed, obliterated, or altered.
2. (b) A person who knowingly or intentionally violates this section commits a Level 5 felony.
