Rule 511-5-5-.03. Testing Required of Newborn Babies

1. (1) It is the goal of the Department that every baby born alive in Georgia shall be tested for the following conditions, unless its parents or legal guardians object in writing on the ground that such tests and treatment conflict with their religious beliefs:

   1. (a) critical congenital heart disease (CCHD)
   2. (b) hearing impairment
   3. (c) argininosuccinic aciduria
   4. (d) beta-ketothiolase deficiency
   5. (e) biotinidase deficiency
   6. (f) carnitine uptake defect
   7. (g) citrullinemia
   8. (h) congenital adrenal hyperplasia
   9. (i) congenital hypothyroidism
   10. (j) cystic fibrosis
   11. (k) galactosemia
   12. (l) glutaric acidemia type I
   13. (m) guanidinoacetate methyltransferase deficiency (GAMT)
   14. (n) homocystinuria
   15. (o) isovaleric acidemia
   16. (p) Krabbe disease
   17. (q) long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency
   18. (r) maple syrup urine disease
   19. (s) medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency
   20. (t) methylmalonic acidemia
   21. (u) mucopolysaccharidosis type 1
   22. (v) mucopolysaccharidosis type II
   23. (w) multiple carboxylase deficiency
   24. (x) phenylketonuria
   25. (y) pompe disease
   26. (z) propionic acidemia
   27. (aa) severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID)
   28. (bb) sickle cell hemoglobinopathies
   29. (cc) spinal muscular atrophy
   30. (dd) trifunctional protein deficiency
   31. (ee) tyrosinemia
   32. (ff) very long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency
   33. (gg) x-linked adrenoleukodystrophy
   34. (hh) 3-methylcrotonyl-CoA carboxylase deficiency
   35. (ii) 3-OH 3-CH3 glutaric aciduria
2. (2) Unless otherwise noted in subparagraph (1) above, testing for conditions (1)(c) through (ii) shall be conducted through laboratory analysis of the baby's blood on a Newborn Screening Specimen Card as provided in DPH Rule 511-5-5-.04.
