2203.1 Basic demographic data for Rock Creek East is shown in Figure 22.2. In 2017, the area had a population of 77,017, or about 11 percent of the city's total. Since 2000, there was an increase in the population by nearly 10,000 people, mostly occurring between 2010 and 2017.
2203.2 Approximately 59.3 percent of the Area's residents were Black in 2017, which is higher than the District-wide total of 47.7 percent but lower than the percentage of Black residents in Rock Creek East in 2000 (77.5 percent). During this time, the number of Black residents in the Area declined to 45,694 in 2017. The number of white residents more than doubled from 6,891 to 17,241 between 2000 and 2017, and by 2017 represented 22.4 percent of the Rock Creek East Planning Area. There was a large increase in the Hispanic/Latino population between 2000 and 2017; persons of Hispanic/Latino origin now represent 20.3 percent of the area's population, double the average for the District as a whole. The percentage of foreign-born residents is also much higher than the District-wide total at 23 percent, which also increased from 2000 to 2017.
2203.3 Relative to the District as a whole, the Area has higher percentages of children and older adults. About 19.3 percent of the residents were under 18, compared to a District-wide total of 17.6 percent. About 14.3 percent were 65 and over, compared to the District-wide total of 11.9 percent.
