1803.1 Figure 18.2 shows basic demographic data for Far Southeast/Southwest. According to the U.S. Census ACS data from 2017, the Planning Area had a population of 76,047, or 11 percent of the District-wide total. The area lost five to 10 percent of its population in each decennial census between 1960 and 2000. However, the population increased by about 8,500 people between 2000 and 2015 and is estimated to increase to 112,477 people by 2045.
1803.2 As of 2017, 31.6 percent of the area’s residents were under 18, compared to 17.6 percent in the District, while only 7.9 percent are over 65, compared to the District-wide total of 11.9 percent. Since 2000, the percentage of youth has decreased (from 36.8 to 31.6 percent), while those over age 65 has increased (from 6.1 to 7.9 percent).
1803.3 Approximately 91 percent of the area’s population is Black, which is significantly higher than the District-wide total of 47.7 percent. Only 1.8 percent of the area’s residents are of Hispanic/Latino origin, and 2.1 percent are foreign born. These percentages have stayed relatively stable since 2000.
