1. (1) Definitions. In this section:

   1. (a) “Apprenticeship program” means an approved apprenticeship program under s. 106.001 (4), Stats., or pursuant to laws in other states governing approved apprenticeship programs, in an industrial arts subject.

   2. (b) “Industrial arts subject” means one of the following subject areas:

      1. 1. Computer numerical control machinist.

         Note: Computer numerical control is commonly referred to by its acronym, CNC.

      2. 2. Cabinet maker.
      3. 3. Machinist.
      4. 4. Sheet metal worker.
      5. 5. Manufacturer.
      6. 6. Welder-fabricator.
      7. 7. Carpenter.
      8. 8. Mason.

      9. 9. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning technician.

         Note: Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning is commonly referred to by its acronym, HVAC.

      10. 10. Plumber.
      11. 11. Industrial pipefitter or millwright.
      12. 12. Electrician.
      13. 13. Auto technician.
      14. 14. Auto body repairer.
      15. 15. Broadband service technician.
      16. 16. Electric line worker.
      17. 17. Mechatronics technician.
2. (2) Authorization. A permit issued under this section authorizes the permit holder to teach in grades 9 to 12 in the industrial arts subject for which the applicant meets the requirements under sub. (3).

3. (3) Eligibility. The state superintendent may issue a tier I permit under this section to an applicant who meets one of the following requirements:

   1. (a) Holds an apprenticeship certificate verifying completion of an apprenticeship program, which has the meaning given in s. 106.001 (4), Stats., or pursuant to other states’ apprenticeship laws and verifies 3 years of experience employed in the industrial arts subject beyond the apprenticeship.
   2. (b) Has completed four years of institutional training in the industrial arts subject at an accredited institution of higher education.
   3. (c) Holds a certification by the Wisconsin technical college system board to teach the industrial art subject or similar subject.
4. (5) Duration. A permit issued under this section is valid for 5 years.
5. (6) Renewal. A permit issued under this section is renewable.
