1. (1) A hoistway shall be fully enclosed, or enclosed on all landings to a height of 1828.8 mm (72 in.) above the landing floor or 1828.8 mm (72 in.) above the highest working level or stair level adjacent to the hoistway.
2. (2) Perforated enclosures may be used where fire resistance is not required. However, such enclosures shall be constructed of at least No. 13 U.S. gauge steel wire, if a steel wire grill or expanded metal grill type, and have openings that reject a 25.4 mm (1 in.) diameter ball.

3. (3) Adequate lighting shall be provided at each landing and in the hoistway.

   Note:

   For purposes of this section "adequate lighting" means 5 foot-candles.

4. (4) Emergency evacuation ladders when installed:

   1. (a) Shall provide access to an emergency exit.

   2. (b) Shall be located in a position so that in an emergency a person can safely transfer from the car platform to the ladder.

      Note:

      Transfer is considered safe when a person can maintain 3 points of contact while making the transfer.
