1. (1) You must inform employees about the presence of hazardous chemicals at the following times:

   1. (a) At the time of initial assignment to a work area where hazardous chemicals are present.
   2. (b) Prior to situations involving a new exposure to hazardous chemicals.

2. (2) You must train employees on all of the following:

   1. (a) Methods and observations for detecting the presence or release of hazardous substances. Examples of these methods and observations may include:

      1. (i) Monitoring conducted by you.
      2. (ii) Continuous monitoring devices.
      3. (iii) Visual appearance or odor of hazardous chemicals when being released.
   2. (b) The physical and health hazards of chemicals in the work area.

   3. (c) The procedures and measures employees can use to protect themselves from hazardous substances. Examples of these include:

      1. (i) Appropriate work practices.
      2. (ii) Emergency procedures.
      3. (iii) Personal protective equipment.
3. (3) You must provide refresher training to fit your needs.

4. (4) You must provide information to employees on all of the following:

   1. (a) The contents of this chapter and where to find a copy.
   2. (b) Permissible exposure limits found in chapter 296-841 WAC, Respiratory hazards.

   3. (c) Any recommended exposure levels for compounds without an exposure limit in the WISHA rules. Examples include:

      1. (i) The PELs found in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards 2004; or
      2. (ii) The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH®) Documentation of the Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) and Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs), 7th Ed.
   4. (d) Signs and symptoms associated with exposures to hazardous chemicals used in the laboratory.

   5. (e) Where to find a copy of:

      1. (i) Your chemical hygiene plan.
      2. (ii) Safety data sheets (SDSs), including those received from the chemical suppliers.
      3. (iii) Reference material on the hazards, safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals found in the laboratory.
