- (1) Employers must prohibit any person other than an employee or duly authorized person from riding in the car.
- (2) Employers must install escape ladders extending the full length of the hoistway and must be located in a position so that, in an emergency, a person can safely transfer from the car platform to the ladder. An "impaired clearance" sign must be posted at the bottom of a ladder when the face of the ladder is less than 30 inches from any structure.
- (3) Employers must install an automatic safety dog or device which will prevent the car from leaving the landing until manually released by the operator.
- (4) Employers must make available a fire extinguisher in proper working condition in the car. For additional requirements relating to portable fire extinguishers see WAC 296-800-300.
