1. 1. Earned a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in English; or

2. 2. Earned a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and completed a major in English or a minimum of 36 semester hours of coursework distributed in the following areas:

   1. a. Literacy and reading: 12 semester hours. Courses shall include:

      1. (1) Survey of British literature;
      2. (2) Survey of American literature;
      3. (3) World literature; and
      4. (4) Literary theory and criticism.
   2. b. Language: three semester hours. Includes the development and nature of the English language.

   3. c. Composition: 12 semester hours. Experiences shall include:

      1. (1) A grammar course integrating grammar and writing;
      2. (2) The teaching of writing, based on current knowledge and most effective practices, including the use of technology for this purpose;
      3. (3) An advanced composition course emphasizing rhetorical practices of expository, persuasive, argumentative, and analytical writing; and
      4. (4) Teaching research including ethical accessing, evaluating, organizing, crediting, and synthesizing information.
   4. d. Oral language: three semester hours. Experiences shall include the teaching of public and presentation speaking, including nonverbal communication and the role of communication in small group and mass communication.
   5. e. Electives from the areas listed in this subdivision 2: six semester hours.
