1. (1) Except as otherwise provided in this section, operating a vehicle that exceeds the maximum gross and axle weight limitations described in Table 2 is prohibited.

2. (2) An overweight permit must be obtained to authorize any exception to the maximum weight limitations described in Table 2.
3. (3) The weight limitation described in Table 2 does not apply to a covered heavy-duty tow and recovery vehicle.

4. (4) Emergency vehicles may exceed the weight limits described in Table 2 with the following limitations:

   1. (a) 24,000 pounds on a single steering axle;
   2. (b) 33,500 pounds on a single-drive axle;
   3. (c) 62,000 pounds on a tandem axle;
   4. (d) 52,000 pounds on a tandem rear drive steer axle; and
   5. (e) 86,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.

5. (5) A vehicle fueled primarily by natural gas or powered primarily by electric battery power may exceed any vehicle weight limit, up to a maximum gross vehicle weight of 82,000 pounds, by any amount that is equal to the difference between:

   1. (a)(i) the weight of the vehicle attributable to the natural gas tank and fueling system carried by that vehicle; or

      1. (ii) the weight of the vehicle attributable to the electric battery power system; and
   2. (b) the weight of a comparable diesel tank and fueling system.
