1. (a) Implementation.

   1. (1) The provisions of this section shall be implemented by school districts beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.
   2. (2) School districts shall implement the employability skills student expectations listed in §127.15(d)(2) of this chapter (relating to Career and Technical Education Employability Skills) as an integral part of this course.
2. (b) General requirements. This course is recommended for students in Grades 11 and 12. Prerequisite: Masonry Technology I. Students shall be awarded two credits for successful completion of this course.

3. (c) Introduction.

   1. (1) Career and technical education instruction provides content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills for students to further their education and succeed in current or emerging professions.
   2. (2) The Architecture and Construction Career Cluster focuses on designing, planning, managing, building, and maintaining the built environment.
   3. (3) Masonry Technology II is designed to further enhance the skills and knowledge of the beginning masonry student. For safety and liability considerations, limiting course enrollment to 15 students is recommended.
   4. (4) Students are encouraged to participate in extended learning experiences such as career and technical student organizations and other organizations that foster leadership and career development in the profession such as student chapters of related professional associations.
   5. (5) Statements that contain the word "including" reference content that must be mastered, while those containing the phrase "such as" are intended as possible illustrative examples.

4. (d) Knowledge and skills.

   1. (1) The student recognizes mathematical concepts used in masonry and is able to apply mathematical concepts used in masonry. The student is expected to:

      1. (A) read a six-foot rule;
      2. (B) read other measuring devices;
      3. (C) read a mason's rule;
      4. (D) apply the 3-4-5 formula to square a corner;
      5. (E) recognize modular increments;
      6. (F) describe how to determine areas and circumferences;
      7. (G) explain the basic parts of a set of drawings;
      8. (H) identify lines, symbols, and abbreviations used on drawings;
      9. (I) explain scales and dimensions used on drawings;
      10. (J) explain types of construction drawings;
      11. (K) identify the purpose of specifications, standards, and codes used in the building industry and the sections that pertain to masonry;
      12. (L) explain the purpose of specifications, standards, and codes; and
      13. (M) describe the purpose of inspections and testing.

   2. (2) The student learns to describe the ingredients and types of mortar. The student is expected to:

      1. (A) explain the use of Portland cement, hydrated lime, and sand;
      2. (B) identify masonry cement;
      3. (C) explain pre-blended mortars;
      4. (D) explain the use of water and admixtures;
      5. (E) list the types of masonry mortars;
      6. (F) explain the properties of plastic mortar;
      7. (G) identify the properties of hardened mortar;
      8. (H) identify the common problems found in mortar application and their solutions;
      9. (I) describe the effects of improper proportioning and poor-quality materials;
      10. (J) explain the effects of severe weather and tempering;
      11. (K) describe efflorescence;
      12. (L) set up, maintain, and dispose of mortar;
      13. (M) maintain the mortar mixing area;
      14. (N) set up a mixing area; and
      15. (O) mix mortar with a power mixer.

   3. (3) The student describes how to install concrete masonry units. The student is expected to:

      1. (A) identify the characteristics of concrete masonry units;
      2. (B) explain how to set up, layout, and bond concrete masonry units;
      3. (C) explain how to lay and tool concrete masonry units;
      4. (D) explain how to clean concrete masonry units;
      5. (E) identify the characteristics of brick;
      6. (F) demonstrate how to set up, layout, and bond brick;
      7. (G) demonstrate how to lay and tool brick;
      8. (H) demonstrate how to clean brick;
      9. (I) cut with chisels and hammers;
      10. (J) cut with masonry hammers;
      11. (K) cut with saws and splitters;
      12. (L) check units and cuts;
      13. (M) install masonry reinforcements; and
      14. (N) install masonry accessories.
