1. (a) Implementation.

   1. (1) The provisions of this section shall be implemented by school districts beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.
   2. (2) School districts shall implement the employability skills student expectations listed in §127.15(d)(2) of this chapter (relating to Career and Technical Education Employability Skills) as an integral part of this course.
2. (b) General requirements. This course is recommended for students in Grades 10-12. Recommended prerequisites: Principles of Architecture and Principles of Construction. Students shall be awarded two credits for successful completion of this course.

3. (c) Introduction.

   1. (1) Career and technical education instruction provides content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills for students to further their education and succeed in current or emerging professions.
   2. (2) The Architecture and Construction Career Cluster focuses on designing, planning, managing, building, and maintaining the built environment.
   3. (3) In Mill and Cabinetmaking Technology, students will gain knowledge and skills needed to enter the workforce in the area of mill work and cabinet manufacturing and installation. Students may also apply these skills to professions in carpentry or building maintenance supervision or use the skills as a foundation for a postsecondary degree in construction management, architecture, or engineering. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in cabinet design, tool usage, jointing methods, finishes, and industry-level practices such as numerical and computer-control production methods.
   4. (4) Students are encouraged to participate in extended learning experiences such as career and technical student organizations and other organizations that foster leadership and career development in the profession such as student chapters of related professional associations.
   5. (5) Statements that contain the word "including" reference content that must be mastered, while those containing the phrase "such as" are intended as possible illustrative examples.

4. (d) Knowledge and skills.

   1. (1) The student relates core academic skills to the requirements of mill and cabinetmaking. The student is expected to:

      1. (A) demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with individuals from varied cultures, including fellow workers, managers, and customers;
      2. (B) complete work orders and related paperwork;
      3. (C) estimate supplies, materials, and labor costs for work orders;
      4. (D) apply the principles of mathematics for accurate standard and metric measurements; and
      5. (E) read and interpret appropriate blueprints, drawings, charts, and diagrams.

   2. (2) The student knows the concepts and skills that form the core knowledge of mill and cabinetmaking. The student is expected to:

      1. (A) demonstrate knowledge of cabinetmaking design;
      2. (B) demonstrate knowledge of the use of woods, fasteners, hardware, glass, and mirrors; and
      3. (C) demonstrate knowledge of the industrial processes and procedures used in mill and cabinetmaking.

   3. (3) The student knows the function and application of the tools, equipment, technologies, and materials used in mill and cabinetmaking. The student is expected to:

      1. (A) use in a safe manner hand and power tools and equipment commonly employed in mill and cabinetmaking;
      2. (B) handle and dispose of environmentally hazardous materials used in mill and cabinetmaking;
      3. (C) demonstrate the proper procedures to saw, plane, shape, turn, bore, mortise, and sand various types of woods; and
      4. (D) demonstrate knowledge of new and emerging technologies that may affect mill and cabinetmaking.

   4. (4) The student applies the concepts and skills of mill and cabinetmaking to simulated and actual work situations. The student is expected to:

      1. (A) identify and construct the various joints used in cabinetmaking;
      2. (B) demonstrate the proper procedures to glue, clamp, laminate, veneer, and inlay wood;
      3. (C) demonstrate the proper procedures to construct and install cabinet doors, furniture doors, drawers, drawer guides, shelves, cabinet interiors, legs, posts, table tops, and cabinet tops; and
      4. (D) apply proper finishing techniques.
