1. (a) In this section, "forbearance" means discretionary permission from the Coordinating Board that allows:

   1. (1) a borrower to postpone payments temporarily;
   2. (2) an extension of time for making payments; or
   3. (3) a temporary reduction in the payment amount from the amount that was previously scheduled.

2. (b) Upon receiving a written or verbal request stating the circumstances that merit such consideration, the Coordinating Board may grant periods of forbearance on any account held by the Coordinating Board for:

   1. (1) unusual financial hardship;
   2. (2) enrollment at least half-time in a postsecondary institution that is eligible to receive federal student aid; or
   3. (3) full-time, active duty service in the armed services of the United States or state military forces, as defined in Texas Government Code, §431.001.
3. (c) The Coordinating Board may request supplemental documentation as needed regarding the request for forbearance.
4. (d) Interest will continue to accrue on a borrower's loans during periods of forbearance. The Coordinating Board will recalculate the borrower's minimum monthly payment upon conclusion of a period of forbearance to reflect the accrued interest.
5. (e) An authorized forbearance under this section extends the repayment period of the borrower's applicable loan(s), to the extent authorized by law.
