A permit-issuing authority may issue an annual permit which allows a motor vehicle equipped with a lift axle to exceed the weight limits set in SDCL chapter 32-22 when its operator raises the lift axle to facilitate turning. The permit allows the operator to raise the lift axle on the permit vehicle's motorized unit before turning at an intersection, provided the lift axle is not raised more than 100 feet before beginning the turn and is lowered within 100 feet after completing the turn. The permit does not allow lifting an axle on a nonmotorized unit, such as a trailer. The permit is valid 24 hours a day. The permit is not valid on the interstate system.
