Unless more restrictive requirements apply in another section in this chapter, the lighting requirements in this section apply to a permit vehicle issued a permit according to this chapter.

1. (1) If the permit vehicle consists of a motor vehicle transporting a load which extends more than 4 inches beyond the width of the vehicle, the load projection must be marked with the following additional reflectors and lighted lamps:

   1. (a) One or more amber lamps and reflectors visible from the front and side, marking the foremost edges at their outermost extremity;
   2. (b) One or more red lamps and reflectors visible from the rear and side, marking the rearmost edges at their outermost extremity; and
   3. (c) One or more amber lamps and reflectors visible from the front, side, and rear, marking any portion of the projecting load which extends beyond its foremost and rearmost edge;

2. (2) If the permit vehicle consists of a motor vehicle transporting a load which overhangs the rear of the vehicle by more than 4 feet, the load projection must be marked with the following additional reflectors and lighted lamps:

   1. (a) If the width of the overhang is 2 feet wide or less, one or more red lamps and reflectors visible from the rear and both sides, marking the end of the load overhang; or
   2. (b) If the width of the overhang is wider than 2 feet, one or more red lamps and reflectors visible from the rear and side, marking each rear corner of the load overhang;

3. (3) If the permit vehicle consists of a motor vehicle transporting a load which overhangs the front of the vehicle by more than 3 feet, the load projection must be marked with the following additional reflectors and lighted lamps:

   1. (a) If the width of the overhang is 2 feet wide or less, one or more amber lamps and reflectors visible from the front and both sides, marking the end of the load overhang; or

   2. (b) If the width of the overhang is wider than 2 feet, one or more amber lamps and reflectors visible from the front and side, marking each front corner of the load overhang.

      Each lighted lamp required in subdivisions (1), (2), and (3) of this section must be visible under clear atmospheric conditions at all distances between 500 feet and 50 feet. Each reflector required in subdivisions (1), (2), and (3) of this section must be visible under clear atmospheric conditions at all distances between 500 feet and 50 feet when the reflector is directly in front of a motor vehicle displaying lawfully lighted headlamps.

During nighttime hours and at other times as required by SDCL 32-17-4, the permit vehicle must be equipped with the following reflectors and lighted lamps in addition to those required in SDCL chapter 32-17:
