If an emergency situation exists and a prior authorization requirement cannot be submitted and a response received within 24 hours, the pharmacy may dispense and receive reimbursement from the department for a five day supply of the drug. An emergency situation includes the need to dispense a drug after regular working hours or over a weekend or holiday or a situation in which a response to a prior authorization request is unavailable or under appeal.
