In addition to the chart review requirement in SDCL 34-11-11, each ambulance service that provides advanced life support, as defined in SDCL 36-4B-1, shall have the following written quality assurance standards in place that conform with industry safety and scope of practice standards:
- (1) Personnel and patient safety;
- (2) Use of lights and sirens during patient transport;
- (3) Compliance with basic life support or medical or program director approved advanced life support patient care guidelines;
- (4) Twelve lead electrocardiogram placement and transmission for patients with suspected cardiac chest pain;
- (5) Blood glucose check for a patient with a suspected stroke;
- (6) Documentation of at least one set of vitals on every patient transport;
- (7) Review of all sentinel, or patient safety, events not primarily related to the natural course of a patient’s illness or underlying condition, that reaches a patient and results in death, severe or permanent harm;
- (8) Compliance with trauma, ST-elevation myocardial infarction, and stroke alert activations; and
(9) Medical or program director review and feedback for all:
- (a) Cardiac arrest resuscitations;
- (b) Patients who received rapid sequence intubation;
- (c) Rescue airway placements after a failed intubation; and
- (d) Pediatric patients with life threatening emergencies.
