The carburetors of all inboard motorboat engines using gasoline as fuel must be equipped with flame arresters, backfire traps, or similar devices that prevent any flames caused by engine backfire from being released in the engine compartment. The flame arresters, backfire traps, or similar devices must have the stamp of approval of the U.S. Coast Guard.
