The training curriculum for delegated medication administration must include:

1. (1) General information relevant to the administration of medications, including:

   1. (a) Governmental regulations related to the practice of nursing, the administration of medication, and the storage, administration, and recording of controlled substances;
   2. (b) Ethical issues;
   3. (c) Terminology, abbreviations, and symbols;
   4. (d) Medication administration systems;
   5. (e) Forms of medication;
   6. (f) Procedures and routes of medication administration;
   7. (g) Medication references available;
   8. (h) The role of nursing assistive personnel in administering medications;
   9. (i) The rights of medication administration including the right patient, right medication, right dose, right time, right route, and right documentation;
   10. (j) Infection control policies and procedures;
   11. (k) Documentation;
   12. (l) Medication errors;
   13. (m) Safe medication storage and disposal; and
   14. (n) Circumstances to consult with or report to the delegating nurse, including the administration of an as-needed medication, a deviation from the delegated instruction of the nurse, or a concerning observation;

2. (2) An overview of the major categories of medications related to the body systems, including:

   1. (a) Cardiovascular;
   2. (b) Endocrine;
   3. (c) Gastrointestinal;
   4. (d) Integumentary and mucous membranes;
   5. (e) Musculoskeletal;
   6. (f) Nervous;
   7. (g) Reproductive;
   8. (h) Respiratory;
   9. (i) Sensory;
   10. (j) Urinary and renal; and
   11. (k) Immune;
3. (3) Instruction on categories of medications relevant to the health care setting where the nursing assistant will be administering medications; and
4. (4) Clinical or laboratory instruction demonstrating medication administration and evaluation of individual competence.
