N.Y. Comp. Codes R. & Regs. tit. 8, § 68.8
(a) Practical experience in geological work satisfactory to the board shall be verified in a manner acceptable to the board and shall:
(4) include at least five years of professional experience, after successful completion of the education requirements set forth in section 68.7(b)(1) of this Part; or at least four years of professional experience, after successful completion of the education requirements set forth in section 68.7(b)(2) or (c)(1) and (2) of this Part; or 12 years of experience as set forth in section 68.7(b)(3) of this Part that was either:
(iii) entailed the applicant being in responsible charge of geological work as described in paragraphs (a)(1), (2) and (3) of this section.
(b) Exception to the practical experience in geological work requirements.
In lieu of the practical experience in geological work requirements set forth in subdivision (a) of this section, the board may accept research in, or the teaching of, geological sciences at the college or university level as qualifying practical experience in geological work, if, in the judgment of the board, the research or teaching is comparable to the practical experience obtained in the practice of geology.
