Brake Lining, Pad Wear and Service Brake Systems

(a) A vehicle shall be rejected for brake lining or pad wear if:
- (1) The vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less and bonded linings are less than 2/32 inch at their thinnest point;
- (2) The vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less and riveted linings are less than 2/32 inch above any rivet head at the thinnest point;
(3) The vehicle has a gross vehicle weight rating in excess of 10,000 pounds and has:
- a. Air drum brakes that are less than 6/32 inch (3/16 inch) at the shoe center for a shoe with a continuous strip of lining;
- b. Air drum brakes that are less than 8/32 inch (1/4 inch) at the shoe center for a shoe with two pads;
- c. Air brakes that are less than 8/32 inch (1/4 inch) at the shoe center;
- d. Air drum brakes that are worn to the wear indicator if the lining is so marked;
- e. Air disc brakes that are less than 4/32 inch (1/8 inch);
- f. Hydraulic disc and drum brakes that are less than 2/32 inch (1/16 inch) measured at the shoe center; or
- g. Electric disc and drum brakes that are less than 2/32 inch (1/16 inch) measured at the shoe center; or
- (4) The wire in wire-backed linings is visible on the friction surface.
(b) A vehicle shall be rejected if the service brake chambers are:
- (1) Mismatched on any axle, or
- (2) Air chamber mounting devices are loose, broken, cracked or missing.
