The employer shall ensure compliance with the following requirements:

1. (a) Abrasive wheels shall be used only on machines provided with safety guards;

2. (b) The following shall be exempt from the safety guard requirement in (a) above:

   1. (1) Wheels used while within the work being ground; and
   2. (2) Mounted wheels, used in portable operations, 2 inches and smaller in diameter;
3. (c) A safety guard shall cover the spindle end, nut, and flange projections. The safety guard shall be mounted so as to maintain proper alignment with the wheel; and

4. (d) Safety guards used on right angle head or vertical portable grinders shall:

   1. (1) Have a maximum exposure angle of 180 degrees; and

   2. (2) Meet the following minimum requirements:

      1. a. The above guard shall be located to be between the operator and the wheel during use; and
      2. b. Adjustment of the guard shall be such that pieces of an accidentally broken wheel shall be deflected away from the operator.
