- (a) The radiation source, sample or object, detector, and analyzing crystal, if used, shall be enclosed in a chamber or coupled chambers that cannot be entered by any part of the body during normal operation.
- (b) All doors and panels accessing the RGDs shall be interlocked.
- (c) The system enclosure shall be interlocked with either the x–ray tube high voltage supply or a shutter in the primary beam, or both, so that no x-ray beam can enter the sample or object chamber while it is open unless the interlock has been conspicuously and deliberately defeated.
- (d) Adequate administrative controls shall be exercised to ensure operations will not continue without a proper functioning interlock.
- (e) The radiation emission for all closed beam RGDs shall not exceed a dose rate of 0.005 mSv (0.5 mrem) in one hour at 5 centimeters outside any accessible surface.
(f) Baggage units shall be provided with means to ensure operator presence at the control area in a position which permits surveillance of the openings and doors during generation of x-radiation. The operator shall also be provided with means to:
- (1) Enable the operator to terminate the exposure or preset succession of exposures at any time during an exposure or preset succession of exposures of one-half second or greater duration; and
- (2) Allow completion of the exposure in progress but enable the operator to prevent additional exposures during an exposure or preset succession of exposures of less than one-half second duration.
