- (a) A waste that exhibits the characteristic of corrosivity shall be assigned the EPA hazardous waste number of D002 if it meets the criteria set forth in (b)(1) or (2), below, and the NH hazardous waste number of NH02 if it meets the criteria set forth in (b)(3), below.
(b) A waste shall be classified under the hazardous waste rules as corrosive if a representative sample has any of the following properties:
- (1) It is aqueous and has a pH of less than or equal to 2, or greater than or equal to 12.5, as determined by a pH meter using method 9040C in EPA publication SW-846, available as noted in Appendix B;
- (2) It is a liquid and corrodes steel (SAE 1020) at a rate of greater than 6.35 mm or 0.250 inch per year at a test temperature of 55°C (130°F) as determined by method 1110A in EPA publication SW-846, available as noted in Appendix B; or
- (3) It is a non-aqueous waste that when mixed 50% by weight with distilled water, or a gaseous material that when mixed with distilled water to form a 2 molar solution, yields a pH less than or equal to 2 or greater than or equal to 12.5 as measured with a pH meter using the protocol specified in method 9045D of EPA publication SW-846, available as noted in Appendix B.
