1. (1) Communicate effectively in more than one language in order to function in a variety of situations and for multiple purposes;

   1. (a) interpersonal communication: learners interact and negotiate meaning in spoken, signed, or written conversations to share:

      1. (i) information;
      2. (ii) reactions;
      3. (iii) feelings; and
      4. (iv) opinions.

   2. (b) interpretive communication: when learners hear, read, or view a variety of topics in the target language they can:

      1. (i) understand a variety of topics;
      2. (ii) interpret a variety of topics; and
      3. (iii) analyze a variety of topics.

   3. (c) presentational communication: learners present information, concepts, and ideas pertaining to a variety of topics using appropriate media and adapting to various audiences of listeners, readers, or viewers in order to:

      1. (i) inform;
      2. (ii) explain;
      3. (iii) persuade; and
      4. (iv) narrate.
