Subd. 1. Definitions.

For purposes of this section, the following terms have the meanings given:

1. (1) "recovered or confiscated" means any of the following:

   1. (i) obtained from a crime scene or in connection with a criminal investigation;
   2. (ii) seized by a law enforcement agency;
   3. (iii) forfeited to a law enforcement agency;
   4. (iv) acquired by a law enforcement agency as an abandoned or discarded firearm;
   5. (v) obtained following the unlawful discharge of a firearm; or
   6. (vi) otherwise obtained and reasonably believed to be connected to a crime; and
2. (2) "law enforcement agency" does not include the State Patrol or the Department of Natural Resources.

Subd. 2. Reporting required.

1. (a) Each law enforcement agency shall register for the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives National Tracing Center's eTrace system, and opt-in to the system's collective data sharing feature.
2. (b) Whenever a firearm is recovered or confiscated by a law enforcement agency, the agency must, as soon as practicable, transmit information relating to the firearm to the eTrace system.
