The director of conservation may, in his discretion, issue permits to commercial fishermen licensed under the provisions of Act No. 84 of the Public Acts of 1929, as amended, to use pound, trap, and gill nets, as provided in subdivisions (d), (g), and (i) of section 5 of Act No. 84 of the Public Acts of 1929, as amended, being S308.5 of the Michigan Compiled Laws, for taking smelt and alewife.
