1. a) As mandated by the Elder Abuse and Neglect Act [320 ILCS 20/4], Department staff, while engaged in carrying out their professional duties, are required to report the abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, or self-neglect of any Illinois resident 60 years of age or older who lives in the community when the older person is unable to self-report. Applicable definitions can be found in Section 2 of the Elder Abuse and Neglect Act.
2. b) Elder abuse must be reported, within 24 hours, to the Department on Aging's Elder Abuse and Neglect Program.
3. c) This reporting requirement applies to all Department staff who suspect that an older person, with whom they have had contact in a working capacity, is an abused elder.
