1. (a) The school of medicine of the University of Hawaii shall develop an accredited family practice residency program with a curriculum that includes opportunities for residents to participate in residency training at designated accredited training sites in rural and medically under-served communities in the State. In developing the program, the following shall be considered:

   1. (1) The use of compensated and volunteer faculty, including physicians residing in the training community, to instruct and supervise participants in the program;
   2. (2) The provision of faculty development training for community physicians assisting in a voluntary capacity;
   3. (3) The provision of inpatient, outpatient, and emergency room training;
   4. (4) The coordination of patient care with ancillary care services, such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, and social services; and
   5. (5) The provision of housing accommodations for participants in close proximity to the training site.
2. (b) The residency program and the training component incorporated therein shall meet the requirements necessary to achieve and maintain accreditation with the accreditation committee for graduate medical education and the residency review committee for family practice. The program curriculum shall be developed to provide participants with the knowledge, training, and skills they require to be eligible to take the board certification examination offered by the American Board of Family Practice.
