1. (a) Exhaust purifier devices shall be used, supplementary to natural or forced dilution ventilation or exhaust collection systems, if required to maintain the concentrations of dangerous gases or fumes below the maximum acceptable concentrations.

2. (b) Only approved exhaust purifier devices shall be used to comply with 5146(a) in enclosed places.

   Note: Approval by the Division will in all cases be based on the Maximum Allowable Standards for Internal Combustion Engine Exhaust Emissions as set forth in 5146(c).

   Devices certified as meeting the standard by the California Air Resources Board pursuant to Labor Code Section 6702 are automatically approved.

3. (c) Maximum Allowable Standards for Internal Combustion Engine Exhaust Emissions.

   1. (2) Exhaust gas concentrations shall be adjusted to a dry exhaust volume using the ratio 15 / [ ½ (% CO) + % CO² + 10(% Hydrocarbon)].
   2. (3) Hydrocarbons are defined as the organic constituents of exhaust as measured by a hexane-sensitized nondispersive infrared analyzer or equivalent.
   3. (4) Carbon monoxide shall be measured by a nondispersive infrared analyzer or equivalent.

   4. (5) The standards refer to a composite sample representing the operating condition described as follows:
