Cal. Code Regs. tit. 8, § 6297 – Cables and Straps.

(a) Cables or straps which are burned, fatigued, kinked, stranded, chafed or sawed shall be taken out of service or properly repaired before further use.
(b) Under ordinary circumstances, a cable shall not be used when 12- ½ percent of the wires are broken within a distance of one rope lay.
