On June 28, 2023, the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board (Lahontan Water Board) adopted Resolution No.R6T-2023-0025, amending the Water Quality Control Plan for the Lahontan Region (Basin Plan). The State Water Resources Control Board approved the amendment under Resolution No. 2024-003 on January 17, 2024.

The adoption of Resolution No. R6T-2023-0025 removes the regionwide bacteria water quality objectives from the Basin Plan, which were based on the measurement of fecal coliform levels to indicate the presence of harmful pathogens. The Basin Plan amendment also inserts discussion of the statewide Inland Surface Waters, Enclosed Bays, and Estuaries Plan -- Part 3: Bacteria Provisions and Variance Policy (REC-1 Bacteria Provisions), adopted by the State Water Resources Control Board by Resolution No. 2018-0038 on August 7, 2018, and directs readers of the Basin Plan to the REC-1 Bacteria Provisions for a full description of the statewide bacteria water quality objectives and implementation.
