1. (a) Portable fire extinguishers shall not be repaired except as permitted by manufacturer's instructions using manufacturer's recommended replacement parts or parts of equal quality. Portable fire extinguishers shall not be converted from one type or class to another type or class of extinguisher.

2. (b) Portable fire extinguishers which have been repaired, converted or altered in conflict with Section 575.2(c) are prohibited from use as portable fire extinguishers. Such extinguishers shall be removed from service and tagged with a red tag bearing the term “Condemned” on each face.

   Exception: The exchange of defective or broken parts with approved parts as defined in Section 557.16(b) or equipment or materials listed as defined in Section 557.12(c) shall not be construed as “repair”.

3. (c) Condemned portable fire extinguishers shall be destroyed by the owner or at the owner's direction.
