1. (a) A geothermal exploratory project is for the purpose of evaluating the presence and characteristics of geothermal resources prior to starting a geothermal field development project. An exploratory project is comprised of not more than six wells. The wells must be located at least one-half mile from the surface location of any existing geothermal wells that are capable of producing geothermal resources in commercial quantities.

2. (b) For the purpose of preparing an environmental document for an exploratory project, a description of the environmental impacts of a project shall be limited to the proposed drill sites, the proposed wells, and any roads or other facilities that may be required before the exploratory wells can be drilled.

   The environmental document for the exploratory project does not need to describe the environmental impacts of any future exploratory or development projects.
