Professional development criteria

- (a) All approved professional development shall be aligned to the standards developed by the State Board of Education.
(b) Approved professional development activities shall relate to the following focus areas:
- (1) Content (K-12);
- (2) Instructional strategies;
- (3) Student assessment and data-driven decision making;
- (4) Advocacy, leadership, and fiscal management;
- (5) Systemic change process;
- (6) Standards, frameworks, and curriculum alignment;
- (7) Supervision;
- (8) Mentoring;
- (9) Next-generation learning and technology integration;
- (10) Principles of learning and developmental stages;
- (11) Cognitive research;
- (12) Family and community engagement and academic planning;
- (13) Collaborative learning community;
(14) Student health and wellness, which may include but is not limited to:
- (A) Antibullying policies; and
- (B) Appropriate training for anticipated rescuers in the use of automated external defibrillators or cardiopulmonary resuscitation; and
- (15) The code of ethics for Arkansas educators.
(c) Approved professional development takes on many forms and may be earned in the following ways:
- (1) Conferences, workshops, or institutes;
- (2) Mentoring or peer coaching;
- (3) Study groups;
- (4) National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification;
- (5) Distance and online learning, including ArkansasIDEAS;
- (6) Internships;
(7) Programs administered by:
- (A) The Division of Elementary and Secondary Education;
- (B) An education service cooperative;
- (C) A public school district; or
- (D) An open-enrollment public charter school;
- (8) College or university course work;
- (9) Action research; or
- (10) Individually guided, as noted in an educator’s individual professional development plan.
(d) Requirements for ArkansasIDEAS include:
- (1) The division shall determine the content and approve all professional development delivered through the Arkansas Online Professional Development Initiative that counts toward required professional development;
- (2) The division shall select courses, products, or both which are research-based and are available from sources with expertise in technology-delivered professional development; and
- (3) Online professional development shall include online registration, assessment, evaluation, and attendance and completion documents.
- (e) A person who holds any license issued by the state board may obtain credit for required professional development through a microcredentialing process approved by the division.
