(a)
(1) Prescription medication shall be:
- (A) In the original container, with a child-resistant cap; and
- (B) Labeled with the:
(i) Child’s name;
(ii) Instructions; and
- (iii) Physician’s name.
- (2) It should not have an expired date.
(b) All nonprescription medicine, except aspirin substitutes, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen, shall be labeled with the child’s name and dated.
- (c) All medicines shall be given to a child only with the written permission of the child’s parent or parents or guardian, which includes:
- (1) Date;
- (2) Type;
- (3) Drug name;
- (4) Time and dosage;
- (5) Length of time to give medication; and
(6) What the medication is being given for.
- (d)
- (1) Medicines shall be kept in a locked area.
- (2) Medicine shall be kept out of the reach of the children when dispensing.
- (e) Medicine shall be stored at the proper temperature, separately from food, at all times.
- (f) Rescue medications such as inhalers or EpiPens shall be inaccessible to children, kept in a cabinet with a childproof-type safety latch or carried by the caregiver.
(g) Medication shall be returned to the parent or disposed of properly when:
- (1) A child withdraws from care; or
- (2) The medication is out of date.
(h)
- (1) Children with special healthcare needs (ex. asthma, seizures, diabetes, etc.) who require scheduled daily medications or medications to be given on an emergent basis (Benadryl, EpiPen, rescue asthma medication, etc.) shall have a care plan.
- (2) Care plans shall have clearly stated parameters, directions, and symptoms for giving the medications.
(3) Care plans shall be updated as needed, but at least yearly.
- (i) The facility shall share information with families regarding medical homes for children.
