Treatment and medications

- (a) The provider shall have written policies and procedures that govern the safe administration and handling of all drugs as appropriate to the psychiatric residential treatment facility.
- (b) The provider shall have a written policy governing the self-administration of both prescription and nonprescription drugs.
- (c) The provider shall ensure that medications are either self-administered or administered by qualified persons according to state law.
- (d) The provider shall ensure that any medication given to a resident for therapeutic and medical purposes is in accordance with the written order of a physician.
(e)
- (1) Medications, including controlled substances, medical supplies, and those items necessary for the rendering of first aid shall be available and properly managed in accordance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- (2) Such management shall address the securing, storing, and administering of medications, medical supplies, first aid supplies, and biologicals, their disposal when discontinued or outdated, and their disposition at discharge, death, or transfer of a resident.
(f)
- (1) There shall be an adequate number of first-aid kits stored with appropriate safeguards but accessible to staff in appropriate locations such as living units, recreation and special purpose areas, buses, and otherwise.
- (2) A first-aid kit shall be equipped with at least an antiseptic solution, adhesive bandages, rolled bandages, gauze pads, medical adhesive tape, cotton-tip applicators, and scissors.
