Note. Potential donors may be temporarily deferred or totally excluded based on the following clinical issues unique to human breast milk and infants, and on current AABB, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or other regulatory guidelines:
- (1) Recent history of blood transfusion;
- (2) Organ or tissue transplant;
- (3) Body piercing, tattoos, or permanent makeup;
- (4) Positive serological test results for HIV, HTLV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C;

- (A) Risk of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).
- (B) Travel deferrals related to CJD risk;
- (6) Risk of food-borne illnesses;
- (7) Vegans not supplementing with Vitamin B12;
- (8) Alcohol consumption;
- (9) Smoking or use of tobacco/nicotine products;
- (10) Medication use, nonapproved medications;
- (11) Use of illegal recreational drugs;
- (12) At-risk sexual partner; and
- (13) Breast milk that has been heat-treated in any way by the donor.
