(a)
(1) All material and equipment including conductors, controls, and signaling devices shall be installed to provide a complete electrical system with the necessary characteristics and capacity to supply the electrical facilities:
- (A) Shown in the specifications; or
- (B) Indicated on the plans.
- (2) Compliance shall be in accordance with applicable sections of NFPA 70 and NFPA 99.
(3) All materials shall be listed as complying with:
- (A) Available standards of UL Solutions; or
- (B) Other similarly established standards.
(b) Performance tests.
- (1) All electrical installations including alarm, nurses’ call, and communication systems shall be tested to demonstrate that equipment is installed and operates as planned and specified.
- (2) A written record of performance tests on special electrical systems and equipment shall be supplied to the owner.
(c) Lighting.
- (1) All spaces occupied by people, machinery, and equipment within buildings, approaches to buildings, and parking lots shall have lighting.
(2) Lighting levels shall be in accordance with the:
- (A) IES Lighting Handbook (1987, Volume II, Applications); and
- (B) Illuminating Engineering Society, IESNA Publication CP29, Lighting for Health Care Facilities (1985).
(d) Equipment installation in special areas.
- (1) Ground fault circuit interrupters shall comply with NFPA 70.
- (2) When ground fault circuit interrupters are used in critical areas, provisions shall be made to insure that other essential equipment is not affected by activation of one (1) interrupter.
(e) Nurses' call system.
(1) In large freestanding birthing centers, a nurses’ emergency call system shall be provided for patients' use at each patient's:
- (A) Toilet;
- (B) Bath;
- (C) Sitz bath; and
- (D) Shower room.
- (2) This system shall be accessible to a collapsed patient lying on the floor.
- (3) Inclusion of a pull cord shall satisfy this standard.
- (4) The emergency call signal (i.e., visible and audible) shall be distinguishable from the normal nurse call signal, and the call light shall be cancelable only at the station of origin.
(5) The signal shall activate:
- (A) An enumerator panel at the nurses’ station; and
- (B) A visible signal in the corridor at:
(i) The patient's door; and
- (ii) Other areas defined by the functional program.
- (6) Provisions for emergency call shall also be needed in outpatient and treatment areas where patients may be subject to incapacitation.
(f) Fire alarm system.
- (1) A protected premises fire alarm system as defined in Chapter 3 of NFPA 72: National Fire Alarm Code shall be required.
- (2) In large freestanding birthing centers, fire alarm systems shall conform to NFPA 101: Life Safety Code, 12-6.3.4.
(g) Emergency electrical service.
- (1) Emergency egress lighting (battery backup) and delivery rooms lighting (battery backup) shall be provided.
- (2) In large freestanding birthing centers, emergency lighting and power shall be provided in accordance with NFPA 99, NFPA 101, and NFPA 110 with eight (8) hours of onsite fuel.
