- (a) The department may only issue a temporary or limited-term driver's license or identification card that is federally compliant to an applicant who has temporary lawful status in the United States. Before issuing a temporary or limited-term driver's license or identification card that is federally compliant, the department must require the applicant provide valid documentary evidence of lawful status in the United States; that evidence must be verifiable through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements or other Department of Homeland Security-approved means.
(b) The department may not issue a temporary or limited-term driver's license or identification card to an applicant for
- (1) a period beyond the expiration date of the applicant's authorized stay in the United States, or, if there is no expiration date, for a period longer than one year; and
- (2) longer than the maximum term of a driver's license or identification card.
(c) The department shall renew a temporary or limited-term driver's license or identification card pursuant to this section and 2 AAC 90.610(b) only if the applicant presents valid documentary evidence that
- (1) the status by which the applicant qualified for the temporary or limited-term driver's license or identification card is still in effect, or
- (2) the applicant qualifies for lawful status under paragraph (a) of this section.
- (d) A temporary or limited-term driver's license and identification card must clearly indicate on the face of the license and in the machine-readable zone that the license or card is a temporary or limited-term driver's license or identification card.
